Centennial was incorporated in September of 2000. It became a city in February of the following year. Arapahoe County was the state's first county. Until 1902, its county seat was Denver. The county originally stretched further east to western Kansas. The county is named after some of the state's earliest inhabitants, the native Arapahoe tribe.
Centennial has more than 50 parks, which include a war memorial rose garden, ball fields, playgrounds, a horse arena, wildlife trails, swimming pools and tennis, volleyball and basketball courts. The city also has several recreational centers. Golfers can pursue their sport at the 18-hole South Suburban Golf Course. Residents also enjoy the South Suburban Ice Arena and the Family Sports Center. Two NHL-sized ice rinks, a nine-hole golf course, a climbing wall and a laser tag arena are located at the Family Sports Center.
For a delightful outdoor experience, locals journey to the Cherry Creek Ecological Park. At the park, visitors can walk along a boardwalk and trails featuring uplands and wetlands. Residents can view the 17 Mile House, managed by the Arapahoe County Recreational District. The 17 Mile House, built during the 19th century, is along the historic Cherokee/Smokey Hill Trail, which connected Bent's Fort and other settlements with several mining camps.
Arapahoe Parks and Recreation manages approximately eight parks and 300 acres of natural areas. Nearby Cherry Creek Lake State Park is a favorite boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and cross-country skiing destination. The park has a model airfield and a shooting range.
The stunning scenery of Rocky Mountain National Park is a recreational paradise. Its 265,000-plus acres are a haven for hikers. This national park has almost 150 lakes and almost 200 peaks over 10,000 feet in elevation. The park is also home to the nation’s highest paved road, Trail Ridge Road. Centennial is within approximately 100 miles of exceptional ski areas like Winter Park, Breckenridge, Keystone, Loveland, Arapahoe Basin, Beaver Creek, and Vail.
Students in Centennial are served by several excellent districts. Approximately one middle school and four elementary schools of the Cherry Creek School District – one of the nation’s top school districts – are in town. About eight elementary schools and one middle school of Littleton Public Schools are in Centennial. High school students can attend schools in nearby Aurora, Englewood and Littleton. Post-secondary students can choose from a gamut of nearby colleges and universities. These include Front Range Community College, Belleview College and Bible Seminary, Regis University, Colorado School of Mines, University of Colorado at Denver, University of Denver, and University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Centennial's proximity to the exciting events and attractions of Denver is also very appealing. The Denver Art Museum, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and Six Flags Elitch Gardens are just a few of Denver’s attractions. The Aurora Historical Museum, Littleton Historical Museum and Hudson Gardens are also nearby. Denver is the home of the Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos, and Denver Nuggets. Denver International Airport is approximately 30 miles away.
